Democracy Artist Statement
These paintings were made for an exhibition called 'Democracy' and focuses on modes of transport used by successive generations of migrants to Australia, beginning in 1788 and continuing through to 2011. I am very interested in the current public debate over the status of refugees and wanted to make a visual comparison of the way in which the (non-indigenous) population and their descendents have arrived here. I have been creating images using water-colour, carbon, pencil and charcoal on paper and have deliberately kept to the simplicity of the image. The main point of interest for me lies in the repetition and juxtaposition of the images which highlights similarities rather than the differences.
